about

We at Smikkelbaard are delighted to see so many friends included on the Burger records tape! Floreat the Netherlands' musicke scene, regardless of what a Dutch garage sound actually is! We're glad to see that Burger and His Majesty's cultural attache to the United States of America, the APTLY named Jan Kennis, have come together to pick a wide variety of sounds, to show what Dutch garage is nowadays. And we're glad of this "sociocultural rectification policy" [sic!]; as the sounds emanating from Dutch garages normally have more of a mainstream feel; some terrible shock jock blasting out Phil Collins or Pauloso (bloody) Young on a relentlessly happy commercial station (whilst the owner patiently looks for a bike pump) or some lunatic practising on one of those bloody draai orgels. At least round our neck of the woods.

We must confess to being a bit naughty though. As we've decided to drag Dutch promotional imagery for modern Dutch music into the late 20th century! Just think! No more Delfts blau tiles or tulips or controversial sea heroes or even scantily clad blonde girls licking a lolly whilst peering suggestively over their sunglasses. No, we decided to go for a true udderground hero with a musical provenance; Frank Rijkaard. He currently resides (as most Dutch heroes do) under the hunebedden, waiting to return when needed. Frank once went on record to say he liked the Pixies - a band that really did channel the garage sound of yore, from The Litter to The Count 5, through the Sonics and Kim Fowley. Get in there, Frank! And (zoinks, pushing the boat out) we decided to give a shout out to Burger and honour Frank's new gaff, at Borger. Can you see the visual pun? We hope so.
